I recently found out that 60 minute games DO count as classical. It’s just that they’re not rated for 2700+ players.
That means the 2019 WFRCC was primarily classical games, but for some reason FIDE called those 60 minute games as ‘slow rapid’. I like to think of the 2019 WFRCC as really a classical world championship since every match’s classical winner is the match’s winner i.e. no one lost the classical portion and then later caught up by winning in the lower time control games.
Anyway, if you ignore the low sample size and the uneven number of games, then these are the calculations for their scores:
Place | Player | Games | Draws | Wins | Score | Losses |
By score then losses | ||||||
1 | “w”esley “s”o | 14 | 8 | 6 | 71.43% | 0 |
2 | Vidit Gujrathi | 4 | 2 | 1 | 50.00% | 1 |
3 | Ian Nepomniachtchi | 12 | 6 | 3 | 50.00% | 3 |
4 | Fabiano Caruana | 12 | 4 | 4 | 50.00% | 4 |
5 | Alireza Firouzja | 6 | 5 | 0 | 41.67% | 1 |
6 & 7 | Hikaru Nakamura | 4 | 3 | 0 | 37.50% | 1 |
6 & 7 | Peter Svidler | 4 | 3 | 0 | 37.50% | 1 |
8 | Vladimir Fedoseev | 4 | 1 | 1 | 37.50% | 2 |
9 | Magnus Carlsen | 8 | 2 | 2 | 37.50% | 4 |
By score then wins | ||||||
1 | “w”esley “s”o | 14 | 8 | 6 | 71.43% | 0 |

Also Nepo is more talented than Magnus in:
- classical only (final 4)
- rapid only (final 4)
- classical only (including quarter-finals)
Larry Kaufman ( hissha ) says: Larry Kaufman explains why Magnus sucks at 9LX
In classical chess960:
- The 2019 classical WFRCC Wesley So is UNDEFEATED 14/14 games, has played the most games and has the fewest losses, most draws & most wins.
- The now 5x & reigning (then 4x & reigning) WCC Magnus Carlsen has the lowest score and has the most losses.
- The future 2022 rapid WFRCC Hikaru Nakamura has the lowest score and has the fewest wins (tied with Peter Svidler).
- Wesley So has never lost a game and is the only 1 to have never lost a game.
- Hikaru Nakamura has never won a game.
- The other 2 world champions Hikaru Nakamura & Magnus Carlsen are tied for lowest score.
- Alireza Firouzja, Hikaru Nakamura and Peter Svidler are the most drawish players:
- Finally, draw rate & score have a correlation coefficient of -1.37%, i.e. almost uncorrelated i.e. almost linearly independent.
Place | Player | Games | Draws | Draw Rate | Wins |
Draw Rate, then wins | |||||
1 | Alireza Firouzja | 6 | 5 | 83.33% | 0 |
2 & 3 | Hikaru Nakamura | 4 | 3 | 75.00% | 0 |
2 & 3 | Peter Svidler | 4 | 3 | 75.00% | 0 |

9 | Vladimir Fedoseev | 4 | 1 | 25.00% | 1 |
