Classical vs Rapid in 2019 WFRCC

Series : Good guys vs Bad guys – Table of Contents

Summary:

Treating 45+15=60 (‘slow rapid’) as classical not rapid and 15+2=17 (‘fast rapid’) as rapid, we get:

Unsurprisingly re Wesley So & Ian ‘Nepo’ Nepomniachtchi

  • Wesley So did better in classical than in rapid overall, in the quarter-finals & in the semi-finals & finals.
  • Nepo was actually the most balanced ( -9.09% ) between classical & rapid in 9LX as in regular chess: runner-up for 2021 classical WCC, 2021 rapid WCC.
    • Nepo did better in classical than in rapid in the quarter-finals.
    • But Nepo did better in rapid than in classical in the semi-finals & finals.
    • Btw, Nepo was runner-up for
      • 2022 rapid WFRCC
      • in score for 2019 WFRCC semi-finals & finals (score in classical portion AND score in rapid portion AND score in combined).
      • in score for 2019 WFRCC classical portion total

Unsurprisingly re Magnus Carlsen & Hikaru Nakamura:

  • Magnus does better in rapid than in classical in the semi-finals & finals & overall.
  • Hikaru does better in rapid than in classical in the quarter-finals & overall.
  • Hikaru has the biggest negative gap ( -43.75% ) between classical & rapid overall & in the quarter-finals.

Misc:

  • Unsurprisingly, Fabiano ‘Fabi’ Caruana did better in classical than rapid overall, in the quarter-finals & in the semi-finals & finals,
    • consistent w/ the finals of the 2018 classical WCC where Fabi lost to Magnus in 3x rapid games in a row yet drew w/ Magnus in 12x classical games in a row.
  • Vidit Gujrathi had the biggest positive gap ( 300% ) between classical & rapid overall & in the quarter-finals and is the least strong rapid player both in the quarter-finals and overall.
    • Maybe it’s consistent w/ losing to Eric Hansen 2x in a row in the 1st chessc*m qualifier of the 2022 rapid WFRCC.
    • Also 300% is about…
      • in total: 7 times the next biggest positive gap (42.86% of Fabi)
      • in total: 7 times the next biggest gap (-43.75% of Hikaru)
      • in quarter-finals: 6 times the next biggest positive gap (50% of Fabi), w/c is also the next biggest gap.
  • Unsurprisingly, Vladimir Fedoseev did better in rapid than in classical in the quarter-finals & overall,
    • consistent w/ later beating Wesley So for 5th place in the 2022 rapid WFRCC.
  • Only 4 of the 9 players are better in classical than rapid:
    • Wesley So in quarter-finals, total & semi-finals & finals.
    • Fabi in quarter-finals, total & semi-finals & finals.
    • Vidit in all available categories, namely quarter-finals & total.
    • Nepo in quarter-finals but not total & semi-finals & finals
  • The top 3 in classical in quarter-finals are in descending order Fabi, Nepo & Wesley So. So ok good Fabi the only wildcard in the quarter-finals, semi-finals & finals for chess reasons (Hikaru was quarter-finals wildcard as 2018 unofficial WFRCC runner-up. Magnus was semi-finals wildcard as 2018 unofficial WFRCC) for ‘winning’ what was essentially the 2019 FRC Candidates. But all 3 of them didn’t lose any classical games in the quarter-finals. Actually…

Correlations:

Comparison of classical vs rapid score in…Correlation
Quarter-finals-38.33%
Total-30.35%
Semi-finals & finals (Note 1)71.48%
(Note 1) Actually I think the correlation for semi-finals & finals doesn’t matter because the classical (‘slow rapid’) portion was 4 games, so it’s harder to catch up there compared to in the quarter-finals
