You have to understand something about chess. Of course I’m better than Morphy. Why am I better than Morphy? I don’t say I have much more talent than him. I just know much more theory, right? If he came back today, and he could not open a book, let’s say, right? He would do badly even against masters, maybe. That has nothing to do with his talent though right? So when you say I’m better than so and so, it doesn’t mean anything ’cause of all this theory in chess. Now if you were to ask if I were the most talented player that’s something else.

While Bobby Fischer was referring to cross-generational comparisons, I believe this is still relevant for same generation comparisons.

I infer the definition of chess talent here is: ‘How good you are adjusted for opening theory’. Then to the extent that 9LX measures talent, chess is about greatness, a combination of theory and talent while 9LX is pure talent. Thus, Magnus Carlsen is the greatest player currently, but Wesley So is the most talented player currently.

Is Wesley So the MTOAT (most talented of all time)? Maybe not. Is Magnus Carlsen the GOAT (greatest of all time)? Well, how can you be the GOAT when you’re ONLY the top 2 most talented player, losing to a nobody “w”esley “s”o in 3x classical games in a row w/o having a single classical or rapid win? Magnus isn’t even top 2 in score. Nepo is. Magnus is top 3. See my calculations here:

actually i think that was not that bad because it ultimately led to the greatest vs most talented thing.

i think bobby was just being humble like ‘oh i don’t really wanna say whether or not i’m the GOAT…’
